Pakistan’s Babar Azam steps down as captain after dismal Cricket World Cup

In a surprising turn of events, Babar Azam has relinquished his position as Pakistan's cricket captain, effective immediately. This decision comes on the heels of Pakistan's disappointing performance at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, where they failed to progress beyond the group stage. Azam, who had been Pakistan's captain in all three formats since October 2019, expressed his decision in a statement, stating, "It's a difficult decision but I feel it is the right time for this call."

Despite this setback, Azam remains committed to Pakistan's cricket team and has pledged his continued support as a player. "I will continue to represent Pakistan as a player in all three formats. I am here to support the new captain and the team with my experience and dedication," he affirmed. (Resource)

The PCB accepted his resignation.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has accepted Azam's decision and has already named his successors. Shan Masood will assume the captaincy in Test cricket, while Shaheen Afridi will lead the team in Twenty20 (T20) matches.

Azam's resignation marks the end of an era for Pakistan's cricket team. During his tenure, he successfully steered Pakistan to the top of the ICC ODI rankings for the first time in May. However, recent struggles, including a fourth-place finish in the Asia Cup and fifth in the World Cup, ultimately led to his decision to step down.

With a challenging tour of Australia looming, Pakistan's new leadership faces an uphill task. They will play three Tests against the formidable Australian side, starting in Perth on December 12. The last time Pakistan managed a Test victory on Australian soil was back in 1995, a statistic that highlights the magnitude of the challenge they face.

Azam's departure leaves a void in Pakistan's cricket leadership, but his legacy as a top-five batsman in all three formats and Pakistan's most successful captain in T20s remains. As the team embarks on a new chapter, they will undoubtedly draw inspiration from his contributions and determination.
